Nick Ledger’s picture of Ittoqqortoormiit in East Greenland, the remotest inhabited place in the Western world, is a study in isolation. Snow and sky merge into a bleached-out background that makes the brightly coloured houses look like blobs of paint on a blank canvas, each a solitary dwelling in a sea of white. The two men shovelling snow seem disconnected from the children playing in the drifts even though they stand a stone’s throw apart. The snow has removed the village’s foundations, leaving its buildings and inhabitants adrift.
