When Life gives you apples...

With orchards aplenty, the English county of Somerset has been synonymous with cider forever, and right across that county, apple growers of all sizes are engaged in the time-honoured seasonal ritual of pressing the autumn fruit.

Just as the best cider is made from a variety of different apples, the pressing business of washing and squeezing nature’s bounty is best undertaken with helpers of all ages, with the aid of an antique scratting machine and an equally aged press to seperate the sweet juice from the apple pulp. Traditionalists use straw as a filtration medium in the press. With the juice now bottled and gently fermenting, all we need do now is wait for spring.
