On the far Eastern edge of Europe lies mountainous Romania, a land swathed in mystery and legend. In Transylvania and the almost mythic Carpathian Mountains at the country’s heart, a largely rural lifestyle continues, rich in folklore traditions that it seems die hard in the 21st century.

The hard-working and big-hearted friendly local people welcomed English photographer Matt Williams-Ellis into their homes and villages. His pictures bring Romania to life in 4Corners.
