Catania Sicily Travel Images

The ancient Sicilian port city of Catania nestles at the feet of Mount Etna. 'A Muntagna, as the locals call it, has shaped the city throughout history: her catastrophic eruptions brought destruction but also building material, and made the lands around the city fertile.

After eruption and earthquake in 1693 the city was rebuilt in the Baroque style using the volcanic lava and older Roman remains. The centrepiece of the Piazza Duomo is a Roman lava elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk, now a symbol of the city.
