Rediscovering the cricketing heritage of the Croatian Island of Vis...

The British first arrived on the Croatian island of Vis in 1811 when Captain William Hoste established a naval base from which to exert British sea power in the region. Now, two centuries later, the British have returned, not in warships but by ferry and speedboat and dressed in cricketing whites. The eminent barristers who form the ranks of the Refreshers Cricket Club are here to play Vis's own Sir William Hoste Cricket Club on their rustic but beautiful ground at Plisko Polje. Over the course of the weekend both sides will display passion, commitment, occasional skill and a prodigious capacity for wine and grilled fish as they continue a tradition first started 200 years earlier.....(full copy available on request).
