Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, is the South American city which, more than any other, has
maintained its retro appearance. Today, having emerged from the economic crisis that has plagued
it over the past decade, the city is returning to life and its beautiful palaces are resplendent once more.
There is a relaxed attitude to life here, an atmosphere that takes you back to the old markets and piazzas of
southern Italy. Italian influence can also be seen in the chic bars and trendy shops while the grandiose
architecture harks back to the secession. The 'Ramblas' is the main street cutting through the city centre
and it is here where the city folk wil take a stroll, chat with friends and endlessly drink the local 'mate'
infusion from their little hip flasks. Meanwhile huge old american cars roam the streets like dinosaurs
surviving from a golden era - a metaphor to the changing times and fortunes of Montevideo and of Uruaguay itself...
