Every January, when winter is at its most intense in the Dolomites, a diverse group of international artists heads for the villages of San Candido and San Vigilio. Their mission? To create works of art. Their chosen material? Snow. They arrive wearing caps, gloves and warm boots, carrying barbed wire, saws, spades and planes. Waiting for them are huge blocks of pressed snow and they have three days to transform these frozen cubes into works of art. Villagers and tourists move amongst the artists, watching them shape, shovel and chip away at the snow, bearing witness to the birth of a sculpture. And at the end of the contest the prizes are not decided by a grand jury of experts. Everyone simply gets together and votes for their favourite.
