Each year as winter approaches, the sandbanks of Donna Nook on the east coast of England fill with hundreds of grey seals, hauling themselves up the beach to give birth to their pups. Grey seals are Britain's largest land mammals, with males growing over two meters in length and weighing over 300kg. There are a number of grey seal colonies scattered around the British Isles but Donna Nook, a nature reserve stretching for 10km up the Lincolnshire coast, is probably the best place to see and photograph these beautiful animals. The male seals arrive first, usually around the beginning of November, to claim their piece of beach and wait for the females to arrive. When the cow seals arrive they will give birth to their pup and suckle it for three weeks. Once this period ends, the females are immediately available for mating and challenges begin between the males, often leading to bloody encounters.
