Two pictures from Richard Taylor’s new collection of Baku, Azerbaijan stood out for me as together, they convey three distinct periods in the life of the city. This is the first one. Taylor shoots the old town of Icheri Sheher, some of which dates to the 12th century, with the ultra-modern Flame Towers looming out of the mist: symbols of the new, oil-rich Azerbaijan which threatens to overwhelm the traditional lives of the people in the street scene below.
