Matteo Carassale is one of those photographers who always work with the light, never against it. You won’t find forced shadows and exaggerated contrasts in his images. In this beautiful photograph of an elegant woman enjoying a cup of hot chocolate in an Antwerp café, the light is reminiscent of a 17th century Flemish painting. It is fascinating to think that the intense chiaroscuro we see in this photograph, light shaped by the old architecture is, in a sense, the same effect Van der Weyden, Van Eyck or Petrus Christus saw in their time in the very same city!
