Crete. Famous for crowded beaches and un-ending rows of hotels along its northern shore, right? Think again. There is another side to this Greek island which is still to be discovered. Three great mountains, Dikti (2148m), Psiloritis (2456m) and Lefka Ori (2453m), form a permanent backdrop to the southern part of the island. Here there are still villages not reached by car. The perfect place to explore quietly, hang-out with the locals and enjoy the delights of zero-kilometer food produce. Two locations form the base camps of your tour: the eco-friendly Milia village (www.milia.gr) on the west side and Aspros Potamos (www.asprospotamos.com) over on the east. This is 'slow travel' at its best and quiet photography to match by Giovanni Simeone. Reportage includes: umbrella-free beaches, a unique banana plantation, 100% organic cooking, Minoan bridges, Venetian monasteries, a real Raki evening, eco friendly Bed and Breakfast, an ancient pottery village, and a real palm tree forest...
