Catania and North East Sicily may be less well known than Sicily’s other major city (whisper it),
Palermo, but it has more than its fair share of architectural and geological treasures. Lying in the
shadow of Mount Etna, Catania owes its beautiful UNESCO listed baroque heart to the volcano itself,
for when eruption and earthquake each delivered disaster in the 17th century, the city was
rebuilt from the very same volcanic rock that forms “A Muntagna” (the volcano) herself. Sicily is renowned for
its ancient Greek and Roman sites such as the iconic greek theatre at Taormina, but at Montalbano
Elicona, the megaliths of Argimusco have been dated back further in time, to 2000BC. The volcanic “History of
the Earth” is on show in the Alcantara Gorges, and at Aci Trezza, the legendary Stones of Cyclops now form a natural marine reserve of dazzling clarity.
