Harpoon fishing for swordfish in the Straits of Messina is a practice dating back to ancient times. Homer mentioned it in The Odyssey and until recently the methods have hardly changed since his times. The traditional 'feluca' boats are now motorised, with platforms extending 20 or 30 meters both up above the vessel and out across the waves. With three or four experienced fishermen on board, each with his own specific role to play, the vessel becomes the perfect hunter.
