Turin, the most important industrial city in Italy, is going through big changes. Architectural development and a wide range of cultural events (Turin is 2008 World Capital of Design) are transforming Turin into a genuine European metropolis looking towards the future. Accordingly, in the last few years traditional Christmas lights have been replaced with illuminated art works. Walking through the streets and old squares or Turin, people have the opportunity to admire and sometimes even participate in works of art, often designed specifically for their location. The event is named 'Luci d'artista'. It is street art for everybody. You can see 'il volo dei numeri' by Mario Merz, located on the most famous building of Turin, Mole Antonelliana, and visible from very far away. You can sit down for a rest on 'illuminated benches' by Jeppe Hein. You can walk through 'Cosmometrie' by Mario Air?, who projects some of the designs of Giordano Bruno's onto the ground beneath the porticoes of the Teatro Regio, or put your fingers into the red fog coming out from 'fontane luminose' by Jan Vercruysse in front of the Royal Palace. Every Christmas Italian and international artists transform Turin in a kind of night gallery...
