The most westerly of Europe’s capital cities, Portugal’s laid-back Lisbon may have been unfairly eclipsed in popularity by bigger city destinations, but on arrival here there’s an immediate sense of discovering something new and bijou; for Lisbon has an easy elegance, a relaxed, lived-in comfortable charm that’s hard to resist. There’s great wine and spectacular seafood, just as you’d expect in a city so close to the sea, and the profusion of small and independent bars, restaurants and shops provide a refreshingly brand-free break that remind us how neighbourhoods should feel.
